Where To Go Hunting

Nelson/Tasman and the nearby areas of Marlborough, Northern West Coast and Canterbury hold Red Deer, Fallow Deer, Chamois, Goats, Pigs and the odd Tahr in some of the most beautiful mountain ranges and native bush filled valleys in New Zealand.

With huge areas of public land there is a lifetime of hunting available for all. The areas where you can hunt on public land are shown on the DOC map by selecting "Hunting areas" under the "DOC features" tab.

DOC Hunting Map Viewer

DOC also provide a recreation activity finder in their website which include hunting. This provides a searchable function for species, dogs allowed, area etc. There is a wealth of knowledge here including what animals you are likely to find, huts and access points.

Walking Access Maps NZ (WAMS) also provides public access maps, property information and much more.

Remember to follow firearm rules and have the valid permits required to hunt on public land.

Richard Wells (Vice President) compiled an extensive presentation in anticipation for the night to help hunters navigate the Ballot process which you can access HERE online instead. Its packed full of important information and some of the lessons Richard has picked up from years of balloting and hunting - its well worth a scroll through.
If you have questions on a particular ballot please "Contact Us" and Aaron will put you in touch with an expert on the particular Ballot you are interested in.
Go to front page of DOC and click HUNTING use search tool to find the particular Ballot area you are after.
